A “inspirational” company helping to get people with barriers back into employment have been put forward for the Business in Action over 50 employees award.

Ikea's HR department “has proven to be a wonderful resource for candidates who have been overlooked elsewhere,” said their nominator.

“I deal with candidates who have physical/mental health issues, substance abuse, learning difficulties and literacy issues,” they said.

“I have worked with Ikea for three years, placing people into the Reading location who struggled to find jobs elsewhere.”

They said of the HR department: “They listen to my candidates, genuinely work with people to accommodate their needs and make adjustments to fit the candidate.

“For someone who has struggled to find work on top of struggling with barriers, this attitude from a large company is inspirational. They truly embrace an inclusive atmosphere and they really try to look beyond the barriers to see the person's true value.

“In my experience, there are precious few employers who offer these opportunities for people with barriers and the ones who do should be celebrated.”
