Alex Baker.

Nominated for Community Champion sponsored by Reading football Club

Alex Baker is a 'micro:bit champion' who stood down from his role of Head of Computer Science at The Abbey School in Reading last year to give time to his family, where he shares caring responsibilities for his two small children with his wife.

His nominator for Community Champion said the role involves him going into primary schools giving lessons, and programming  mini-computers, creating sensors or robots, or just handheld games.

Alex also supports primary school teachers with their computer science knowledge and skills.

“He is on a mission to ensure the next generation have the skills they need to progress in a world of robotics, autonomous vehicles and IoT (the Internet of Things),” they said.

Alex can also be found on Saturdays running coding clubs and micro:bit lessons in libraries to reach even more children.

“I am in awe of his energy and enthusiasm and feel he really is the definition of a community champion as well as a micro:bit champion.” said his nominator who took over from Alex as Head of Computer Science.

They added: “ Alex now works as a teacher in the department under my management. This could have been awkward, but Alex is so great and supportive it has been easy for me.”
