Nominated for Charity of the Year sponsored by Roc Search
What started off as a small local ‘grub club’ has become one of the biggest and most successful locally founded food charity initiatives in and around Reading.
SHARE Wokingham launched in Norreys Church has now been nominated for Charity of the Year, sponsored by Roc Search,
It was founded by Claire Revie in Wokingham during the Covid pandemic in 2020 to help those struggling to buy food.
Three years on, the charity has 15 sites across Berkshire feeding 600 households and 2,000 people per week with over 150 local volunteers working every day, says its nominator.
“It is a win/win charity; tackling food waste while fighting food poverty,” they said. Every week surplus stock from local food suppliers and supermarkets – fresh fruit, vegetables, bakery, dairy products and so on – is allocated to each of the 15 community sites by SHARE HQ and is redistributed to those who need help.
A massive 40-plus tonnes of surplus food which would otherwise go to waste is redistributed every month by SHARE, said the nominator.
