Freely Fruity.

Nominated for Putting Reading on the Map sponsored by Jacobs/Purple Turtle

Three years ago Freely Fruity was set up with aim of making fruit and veg freely available to everyone. Now the charity has been nominated for Putting Reading on the Map,sponsored by Jacobs the Jewellers and The Purple Turtle.

Their nominator said: “They created freely fruity to provide food grown in Reading before, during and just after Covid”

They praised the “selfless group who spend their own time sorting this all out. For the environment, for the town, for the children, for tomorrow.

“They are planting hundred of trees and showing the children how to survive on home grown produce. They are what makes Reading so special,” said their nominator.

The charity is run by Matt Knight, James Whittingham and Ryan Simpson. Their first plan was to plant fruit trees and bushes into local communities to provide food to people and wildlife alike. The trees would directly reduce carbon emissions and lower the carbon footprint of shop-bought fruit.

During Covid they changed their plans to include a community allotment and started planting produce free fresh organic produce for food banks in Berkshire. Since then the charity has extended its work.
