A dedicated local team giving their time free to welcome people arriving in Reading for the last two years has been nominated as Volunteers of the Year, sponsored by A.B. Walker.

Based at Reading Station and managed by REDA, Reading's Economic and Destination Agency, Reading Welcome Ambassadors greet visitors at a mobile visitor information stand and help them make the most of their visits to the town.

Their nominator said: “Ten local people volunteer at the station every weekday morning, whatever the weather and time of year, to provide a friendly welcome to Reading, information on things to do in Reading and practical help with how to reach the eventual destination in Reading.

“They are our unpaid ambassadors.

“Over the last 12 months, they have gone above and beyond their remit to unite people with lost belongings, walk them across town to their destination and help them with onwards journeys.

“The volunteers' own pride in Reading is transmitted to visitors and, as the first point of contact for visitors, they give a great impression of our town.

“Their unstinting commitment to Reading should be recognised.”
