Freely Fruity
The Green Community Award sponsored by Tomato Energy
Communities that are making their neighbourhoods greener and cleaner; individuals, community groups and businesses that have implemented a project that has saved resources, implemented green initiatives or introduced successful recycling or upcycling.
A group of “amazing volunteers” have planted almost 2,000 fruit trees in the local area in the past four years.
The charity Freely Fruity planted trees in over 30 local schools and started nine large community orchards. They have also built eight community gardens and provided everything the communities need to grow their own sustainable produce.
Working with Reading Gateway churches, a community development association and Reading Borough Council, this year they have planted hundreds of fruit trees and built four community gardens in Whitley.
With community groups and Holiday Activities and Food teams, the charity has educated children and adults on sustainable growing techniques.
